BOBOTIE
A sweat flavourful meat dish from South Africa
- 2 lb Ground Beef
- 2 Onions
- 1 thick slice Bread
- ⅓ cup Milk + ½ cup Milk
- 2 Eggs
- 1 tablespoon Curry Powder
- 2 tablespoons Sugar
- 2 t Salt
- 2 t Turmeric
- Juice from 1 Lemon
- Slivers from about 6 Almonds
- ½ cup Raisins
- 4 Bay Leaves or Lemon Tree Leaves or the Zest from one Lemon
- ½ cup Chutney or Apricot Preserve
- Slice the onions and fry in a little oil.
- Take out of the pan and fry the ground beef.
- Crumb the bread and get it wet with the ⅓ cup Milk.
- Mix all the ingredients except the leaves, one egg and the ½ cup milk.
- Put in a greased glass baking dish so that it is about two inches thick.
- Stick the leaves into the mixture or sprinkle the zest on top.
- Bake for 20 minutes at 350°F.
- Beat the egg and ½ cup Milk and pour over the meat.
- Bake for a further 30 minutes at 350°F.
- Serve with rice, a sweet chutney and freshly sliced bananas. [You can slice the bananas and serve them in a little milk to prevent them from going black and nasty.]
